Fix guide

Fix Bor Sync Lag & Stale Contract Reads on Polygon

Stale reads happen when an RPC endpoint returns blockchain data from an older block height than the confirmed network tip. On Polygon's 2-second block intervals, even 3 blocks of lag means your application is operating on 6-second-old state.

Why Do RPC Endpoints Lag Behind the Tip?

Factor 01

Multi-tenant cloud providers routing requests across clusters where individual node replicas lag 2–8 blocks behind Bor tip.

Factor 02

EBS disk throttling on virtualized cloud nodes during heavy Polygon gas usage periods, slowing block validation.

Factor 03

Heimdall-v2 milestone synchronization delays where the consensus layer falls out of lockstep with Bor block execution.

Factor 04

Decentralized or aggregated RPC gateways scattering successive calls to different anonymous nodes with conflicting block heights.

How to Diagnose Stale Block Behavior

1

Query `eth_blockNumber` across multiple consecutive requests and check whether the returned block height decreases or stutters.

2

Compare your endpoint's block height against the canonical network tip using Polygonscan or a direct bare-metal node.

3

Check state consistency on a newly updated contract balance or storage slot immediately after transaction confirmation.

4

Migrate from load-balanced cloud proxies to a dedicated Polygon node synchronized directly to the canonical network tip.

for i in {1..5}; do curl -s -X POST "YOUR_RPC" -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"eth_blockNumber","params":[],"id":1}' | jq -r .result; sleep 1; done

Production Requirements

Slight state drift is tolerable when:

  • ✓ reading historical analytics or archived transaction receipts
  • ✓ displaying non-financial frontend dashboard metrics
  • ✓ user can manually refresh their browser view
  • ✓ latency between actions is >30 seconds

Synchronized, fresh-tip RPC is required when:

  • ✓ reading on-chain DEX reserves or liquidity pool ticks for arbitrage
  • ✓ monitoring liquidation thresholds in lending protocols
  • ✓ indexing live event logs without missing reorg-sensitive updates
  • ✓ serving production APIs where stale contract data creates user complaints
