Fix guide
Fix Polygon WebSocket Disconnects & Dropped Subscriptions
Silent WebSocket drops and broken event filters usually occur when shared proxy layers time out idle connections or drop sockets during Polygon block surges.
Why Polygon WebSockets Drop
- Idle connection timeouts on shared load balancers that silently drop TCP sockets without a clean close frame.
- High-frequency newHeads or log filtering during network congestion exceeding shared buffer thresholds.
- Absence of automatic client-side ping/pong heartbeat loops causing missed disconnect detection.
- Shared infrastructure head-of-line blocking when heavy trace or eth_getLogs queries share the same upstream node pool.
How to Protect Event Streams
- Implement resilient exponential backoff reconnects and re-subscribe to all active filters upon socket reconnection.
- Send client-level ping frames every 30 seconds to prevent NAT/proxy gateways from dropping the TCP socket.
- Test WebSocket stability against an authenticated, managed Polygon connection with clear buffer headroom and keep-alive support.
Shared WebSocket is suitable when:
- running casual development or prototyping
- missed block headers do not cause financial or operational loss
- reconnecting manually or tolerating intermittent drops is acceptable
- event subscription volume is minimal
A dedicated endpoint is necessary when:
- trading bots, liquidations, or DEX arbitrage depend on zero-drop event streams
- silent disconnects cause desynchronized frontend state or failed indexing
- you need sustained, unthrottled newHeads and logs pub/sub subscriptions
- reconnect storms on shared RPC disrupt production reliability
